"Characterization of the renal ischemic preconditioning induced by kidney-centered irradiation in mice"

Renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is the leading cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) and corresponds to the transient interruption of renal blood flow. Renal I/R is an unavoidable event in kidney transplantation and cardio-thoracic surgery, with a negative impact on short- and long-term kidney outcomes.

Translational research in the field focuses on the pathophysiology of ischemic conditioning to refine strategies for preventing or attenuating the severity of I/R-associated AKI and improving patients’ health and survival. We and others have observed that whole-body irradiation causes renal ischemic conditioning in mouse. Still, the mechanisms remain largely unknown. Furthermore, the impact of kidney-centered irradiation on renal resistance against I/R has not been studied. This study based on a mouse model of renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) aims at (i) testing whether and how irradiation strictly centered on the kidney protects against I/R injury, and (ii) determining the shortest efficient delay of kidney irradiation to achieve such a nephro-protection.

The results reveals that kidney irradiation increases the vascular surface in the renal parenchyma and confers resistance against renal I/R damage, which highlights novel putative strategies in the field of acute kidney injury.
