As of September 2021, the University of Liège, the Haute École HELMo, the Haute École Robert Schuman and the Haute École de la Province de Liège are jointly organizing a 120-credit Master's degree in Nursing.

Training

Advanced Practice Nursing (APN): a response to a major health challenge.

The incidence of chronic pathologies, the complexity of care, the gradual inversion of the age pyramid, the reality of current medical provision and the increasing expectations placed on nurses fully justify the need to add an essential link to teams of healthcare professionals: the advanced practice nurse (APN).

The master's degree in nursing leading to the position of APN will focus on care in complex situations, support for the development of care team skills and the use of research findings. This function will be accompanied by a specific status - Nurse of Advanced Practice "IPA" - and a list of responsibilities, which may include medical acts in the context of a cooperation agreement between professionals - the contours of this new function have yet to be specified in the law.

One training course...four partners...

Within the Pôle Liège-Luxembourg, this training program is organized jointly by the four partners - ULiège, HELMo, HEPL and HERS - and leads to a co-diploma. The clinical excellence combined with the expertise of these varied and complementary partners will give future graduates the profile expected by the healthcare professional sector.

... a specific public

This master's program is aimed at holders of a bachelor's degree in general nursing or equivalent. It enables candidates to acquire high-level expertise, reinforce their knowledge and develop new skills in the increasingly complex task of providing high-quality nursing care to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare system.

Targeted learning in theory and practice

It is with these requirements in mind that this ambitious program corresponds to level 7 of the European Certification Framework.

Job opportunities

This training leads mainly to the position of advanced practice nurse. The legal framework specifying the status of this function has yet to be drawn up, and will determine the list of responsibilities and medical acts that can be performed autonomously by these professionals.

The Master's degree offers a wide range of career opportunities. In addition to access to a doctorate and a career in research, graduates of the Master in Nursing will be able to access the following positions

  • monitoring chronic patients in collaboration with a specialist doctor
  • health care coordinator
  • manager of a research or expertise program
  • nursing or nursing science teacher

Based on clarification of the Hospital Act, or depending on how current legislation evolves, they could in future have access to a hospital management position.

Flexible timetable and hybrid teaching

The Master's program is organized around an adapted timetable: courses are held over a maximum of two and a half days per week, with a majority of activities taking place online (1 day of face-to-face teaching and the rest of the activities in remote mode, either synchronously or via podcasts available online). This mixed schedule and modality (face-to-face/distance) makes it possible to follow the Master's program while pursuing professional activities on a part-time basis.

Time slots are set aside for planning internship periods. Classes are held mainly at ULiège's Sart Tilman campus.

Various organizational and/or pedagogical arrangements are possible: reduction of the annual program, Educational Leave, Valorization of Prior Learning and Experience, exemptions, etc

Students who so wish may request a reduction by contacting Ms Myriam Carlisi, pedagogical coordinator.

Certificates and continuing education

The Faculty of Medicine organizes a series of certificate courses for professionals. Access conditions are specified for each course.
