Theoretical and practical training

In order to train highly-skilled scientists who will study diseases to better understand their origins and the cellular and molecular mechanisms of their development, Biomedical Sciences studies combine in-depth theoretical teaching in human biology with cutting-edge training in the most modern technologies.

Formation SBIM

Bachelor's degree

High-quality biomedical research is often multidisciplinary. It must combine the scientific intellectual approach with technological realities.

The 3-year bachelor's degree is divided into 6 quarters (Q1-Q6):

  • Q1 and Q2 include intensive courses in basic sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics) andEnglish, as well as biomedical-oriented and cross-disciplinary courses.
  • Q3 includes biomedical courses such as biochemistry, physiology, immunology, microbiology, virology... Generally speaking, at the end of these 3 quarters, you know what a living organism is, how it develops, how it ages and what biochemical and physiological mechanisms are involved in these processes.
  • From Q4 onwards, you'll learn aboutnormal and diseased (pathological)human beings, and the cellular processes involved.
  • The aim of Q5 and Q6 is to train students in scientific research, both from the point of view of experimental practice (didactic laboratories, cell culture practical work, integrated practical work) and conceptual approach, while integrating the rigor and precision required for all experimentation.

English is taught from Block 1 and throughout the bachelor's degree. These courses, given throughout the year, enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in English, the international language of knowledge dissemination. Students will be required to read and write scientific articles in English.

Advanced Master's in Multidisciplinary Research (French/English)

This in-depth Master's degree is the ideal pathway to research and a doctorate, providing you with training in cutting-edge technical and bioinformatics tools, as well as the latest advances in the following fields:

  • Neuroscience,
  • Oncology
  • Immunology and vaccinology,
  • Pharmacology and toxicology
  • Cardiology,
  • Gastroenterology,
  • Clinical biology.

This master's degree is a program of excellence, taught mainly in English, based on a combination of ex cathedra courses and innovative participatory teaching methods. This teaching encourages interactivity, autonomy and the development of critical thinking skills.

It is fully in line with Problem Based Learning, which has been applied for many years at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Liège. You'll get a personalized profile, be fully active and possess a high degree of autonomy and organization.

Multidisciplinary training

This multidisciplinary Master's degree aims to train excellent biomedical research practitioners internationally, and more specifically to prepare future graduates for a career in industry or a PhD in the world's leading laboratories. You will be introduced to the latest data on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of disease, as well as the most recent therapeutic strategies. The emphasis is on developing your ability to synthesize, think critically, present and formulate research questions.

Specialization in Quality Assurance

Unique in French-speaking Belgium.

The mission of the quality assurance professional is to ensure the conformity of all product or service production activities: design, development, production, installation, services and documentation. This naturally includes regulating the quality of materials, products and components. This training will provide you with professional skills in quality system design and maintenance, auditing, safety organization... These skills can be applied in a number of specific fields, such as foodstuffs, testing or analysis laboratories, healthcare institutions, or chemical and microbiological environmental monitoring.

Specialized degree in Biomedical data management

Co-organized with UNamur, this Master's degree is unique in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. It trains professionals in the management of medical and pharmaceutical data generated by research and development in universities and industry, and by medical practice in hospitals.

As a biomedical data specialist, you will design and implement the organization, analysis, exploitation and archiving of data, combining a high level of biomedical and IT expertise. Your work will enable you to record and statistically confirm observations, validate procedures and communicate information to all those involved in the biomedical sector.

Specialization in Clinical Research Management

Co-organized with the University of Namur, this Master's degree focuses on research carried out on humans, to validate the efficacy and safety of new therapeutic products and techniques. This Master's degree will provide you with the professional skills needed to design, carry out, analyze and promote clinical research in hospitals and contract research organizations.

Clinical research is a branch of the Health Sciences that is essential to the development of new treatments. It is used to determine the safety and efficacy of drugs, devices, diagnostic products and therapeutic regimens intended for human use. This Master's degree will provide you with the professional skills needed to design, carry out, analyze and promote clinical research in hospitals and contract research organizations.

During the course, you will have the opportunity to make numerous visits to companies and hospitals, as well as practical work and a 5-month internship in a laboratory or company in Belgium or abroad, giving this program a strong professional dimension. Your Master's program concludes with a dissertation in a research laboratory or hospital, enabling you to carry out a personal project from conception to completion.
